Paul Pen announces the rights of his novel Light of the Fireflies is now acquired by Seacamel Entertainment

Some stories are too powerful to stay on the page. The Light of the Fireflies is one of them.

Sea Camel Entertainment is thrilled to announce that it has acquired the film rights to The Light of the Fireflies, the internationally acclaimed novel by bestselling Spanish author Paul Pen. The film adaptation is now in development, with more details to be announced very soon.

The Book

Published in Spain as El brillo de las luciérnagas, The Light of the Fireflies is a story that is impossible to forget. A young boy has spent his entire life underground, in a basement with his parents, grandmother, sister, and brother. Before he was born, a fire disfigured the family. His sister wears a white mask to cover her burns. He passes his days with his cactus, his books about insects, and the single ray of sunlight that filters through a crack in the ceiling.

Then fireflies appear in the basement. His grandmother tells him there is no creature more extraordinary than one that can make its own light. That light awakens something in him. He begins to ask questions no one will answer. Questions about his sister's baby. About what happened before his own birth. About why they are locked away from the world.

What unfolds is a story of darkness and light, of love and terror, of secrets buried so deep they reshape everything you think you understand. Haunting, suspenseful, and deeply human, the novel earned Paul Pen comparisons to Roald Dahl, Stephen King, and Alfred Hitchcock.

The Author

Paul Pen was born in Madrid in 1979 and is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Spanish fiction. A novelist, journalist, and screenwriter, he won the Gonzoo Prize for author of the year in 2014 and has seen his work translated into multiple languages across the globe.

The Light of the Fireflies became his international breakthrough, selling over 150,000 copies worldwide after its English translation was published. His other novels include Desert Flowers and Under the Water, and he has worked as a screenwriter on projects for Netflix. His debut novel The Warning was adapted for cinema in 2018.

He is, in every sense, a storyteller built for the screen.

What Comes Next

Sea Camel Entertainment will be sharing further details about this very special project in the coming weeks, including the creative team that will bring this story to life alongside Paul Pen himself.
